Take Action First by Giving
“Take action first by giving” was a phrase in an excellent recent sermon by Jay York at Shallowford Presbyterian Church? that really struck me, so I’m working on doing more of just that.
Here is the full quote he used: the words from Anne Lammott in her book ‘Help’:
??Gratitude begins in our hearts and then dovetails into behavior. It almost always makes you willing to be of service, which is where the joy resides. It means you are willing to stop being such a jerk. When you are aware of all that has been given to you, in your lifetime and in the last few days, it is hard not to be humbled, and pleased to give back. Saying and meaning thanks leads to a crazy thought. What more can I give? We take action first by giving, and then the insight follows, that this fills us.?
Here’s the thing: In the online-marketing realm you hear so much about “take action!” or “Just take action!” and all of that is just fine and dandy but most people aren’t really ready to “take action”, even if they need money immediately if not sooner.? Why?? Because the ground hasn’t been prepared.
Like the parable in the Bible, the seeds sown (the ‘action taken’ in this case) fall on the hard and stony ground of ‘give me something now no matter what’, and of course the person’s business doesn’t grow very well that way.
I’m guilty of this, of not giving enough, and so up ’til Christmas I’ll be giving here on this blog, the things that I know and the things that I believe might help you.
So when I say I’ll take action first by giving, feel free to hold me to it, and comment below.
